What do people do at the Zoo Lake? ›

Zoo Lake is a popular spot for picnicking, walking your dog or taking a leisurely boat ride.

There's no entrance fee, but take cash along if you want to rent a paddle boat.

zoo lake park is a public area, therefor you should be allowed to, without any costs. A warning though, because its a public place no loud music, and no booze will be allowed at all, and would be against the law.

The zoo's restaurant provide affordable scrumptious meals to suit any occasion and palette, from mouth watering sandwich, pizza to salads. There are also several kiosks, ice cream and other vendors situated in various sites around the zoo.

Respect the Animals

Do not yell at or taunt the animals, do not bang on their enclosures and do not throw objects into their habitats. We will remove you from the property the first time this rule is violated.

A zoo is a place where different kinds of animals, birds, reptiles, and fishes are kept in cages or enclosed areas for people to see.

Visitors are allowed to bring outside food and beverages, so consider packing a picnic lunch.

There are no lockers in the changing rooms so take your belongings with you to leave by the side of the pool or lock up your valuables in your car. Note that there is no alcohol or braais allowed on the premises, although you can bring your own snacks and soft drinks for a picnic.

From its Cape Dutch Architecture to its crisp, clean water the Zoo Lake Public Pool is a summer hot spot. Entrance won't break the bank but be sure to take some sun screen and floaties with. For a very, very long time this public spot has served the community to the fullest extend.

Avoid tight, overly revealing, or offensive clothes.

Remember that you'll be crouching, climbing, bending, and moving a lot to see the animals, so you'll want to avoid tight pants that could rip and short skirts, dresses, and shorts that could ride up.

Food and Drink: We have various food locations throughout the Zoo. Those with additional dietary needs have the option of bringing a small quantity of specialty items for personal consumption.

Food and Amenities

You may bring your own food and non-alcoholic drinks into the Zoo.

The Zoo Trot is a fun 5km or 10km walk/run that takes place every second Sunday of the month at the Joburg Zoo.

Zoo Lake is located on the corner of Jan Smuts Avenue and Westwold Way in Parkview, Johannesburg. The area is well serviced by taxis and buses and there are a number of parking areas off Jan Smuts and Westwold Way, as well as off Lower Park Drive, which also borders the park.

For the safety of the animals, no outside food or drink is allowed in the Zoo. Water may be brought in and we provide several water bottle fill stations on grounds. Picnic grounds are available at Blank Park, just north of the parking lot. Concessions inside the Zoo are operated by Hy-Vee throughout the summer.

Today, zoos are meant to entertain and educate the public but have a strong emphasis on scientific research and species conservation. There is a trend toward giving animals more space and recreating natural habitats.
