Don't ask the doctor who is dismissing you for a referral. Your better bet is to find someone on your own, someone who is independent from the doctor who has fired you. Don't complain about the old doctor. It does not move you forward, and may give your new doctor a reason not to engage with you as a patient.

Practicing beyond the scope of the profession. Releasing confidential information without authorization. Being convicted of a crime. Failing to return or provide copies of records on request. Being sexually or physically abusive.

Otherwise, you may make an anonymous complaint at the Department of Health complaint hotline by calling 800-792-9770, 24 hours a day. Complaints about New Jersey physicians are processed by the Board of Medical Examiners, a subsidiary of the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs.

Medical gaslighting refers to cases in which a healthcare practitioner imposes a pattern of questions, testing or diagnosis that runs counter or tangential to the history or symptoms the patient is describing or experiencing. There is usually a clear power imbalance at play.

A physician also may terminate a patient without cause as long as the termination is handled appropriately (see Question "Can a physician refuse to treat a current patient?").

Office of Professional Medical Conduct (OPMC)

OPMC investigates complaints about physicians, physician assistants and specialist assistants and monitors practitioners who are subject to Orders of the State Board for Professional Medical Conduct.

A discharge by an employer of an individual for violation of an employer rule is for misconduct connected with the work if the rule is reasonable, the individual knew or should have known the rule, and the violation is wilful or wanton, material, and substantially injures or tends to injure the employer's interests.

How do I file a complaint? Complaint forms can be obtained by either telephoning the Board office at (973) 504-6405 or downloading the complaint form from the Board's web site . The complaint form provides a convenient format to assist the Board in obtaining accurate and complete information on each complaint.
