How much range does 2.4G Tx/Rx give? (2024)

to answer an unanswerable question

it depends on:
1) local noise floor
1) local noise floor
1) local noise floor
1) local noise floor
2) transmitter (signal strength AND encoding scheme)
3) receiver (sensitivity & filtering of interference)
4) antenna selection
5) location flown in (multipathing? water? signal blocking? disturbance of the fresnal zone?)

the place to ask is in FPV sections, where gear is pushed as far as it will go. in which case you will find

the best quality 2.4ghz transmitter & receivers from airtronics/sanwa & futaba WITHOUT major modifications (like signal boosters, patch antennas, etc) will go 1.5-2.5 miles.
the worst quality (spektrum, assan, all other cheap chinese crap) will go a few hundred feet and you are an extremely lucky person to hit 1 mile without major issues

from my years of flying i can tell you that unaided visual sight of an airplane as large as a fluorescent orange 2m glider and 1/4-1/3 ish sized scale planes is only roughly 1/8m. people claim a mile or more sometimes, but they're full of it. you may see a dot, but you can't see features, wings, know what its doing, etc.

now you want to go back a cuple decades to true 1/4 scale when 1/4 scale meant planes had 10' wingspans and weighed 20 pounds. ya, you can see those well beyond 1/8m.

FAQs

What is the range of a 2.4GHz remote control? ›

2.4GHZ transmission: Anti-interference, remote control distance can reach 500 meters.

How far can 2.4GHz transmitter go? ›

Radio control

Many radio-controlled drones, model aircraft, model boats and toys use the 2.4 GHz band. These radio systems can go up to 500 meters in R/C cars and over 2.5 kilometres (1.6 mi) in drones/airplanes.

What is the range of a 2.4GHz RC plane? ›

Generally, modern RC transmitters offer a reliable control range of several hundred meters to several kilometers. Transmitters operating in the 2.4GHz frequency band, which is commonly used in RC systems, can typically provide a range of several hundred meters.

What is the maximum range of RC transmitter? ›

RC control range varies greatly depending on system used, installation, antennas used, terrain, and even weather conditions. But in general, for discussion purposes here, RC systems can be categorized into Short Range (2km and under) , Medium (2-10km) and Long Range (>10km).

Is 2.4 GHz for short range? ›

Use 2.4 GHz for a device farther from the router

This wavelength has a longer range and can penetrate solid objects more easily than the 5 GHz band, making it ideal for devices that are taken from room to room or are further away from the router.

Is 2.4 GHz good for long range? ›

The 2.4 GHz WiFi frequency has a longer range but a lower bandwidth. This means it has a long-range coverage area, but it comes at a cost, which is slow speed. However, this does not imply that the frequency's slow speed renders it useless.

What are the limitations of 2.4 GHz? ›

Advantages and Disadvantages

2.4 GHZ. Advantages: farther range, can penetrate through solid objects easier. Disadvantages: because 2.4 GHz is more common, it's more susceptible to interference, slower speed.

Which has longer range 2.4 or 5GHz? ›

The primary differences between wireless frequencies are the range (coverage) and bandwidth (speed) that the bands provide. The 2.4 GHz band provides the most coverage but transmits data at slower speeds. The 5 GHz band provides less coverage but transmits data at faster speeds.

Why 2.4GHz is used for RC? ›

Convenience. The 2.4 ghz band RC systems are the most common. They are now insignificantly more expensive to manufacture than the older AM and FM systems and they provide better reliability.

How does 2.4GHz RC work? ›

With 2.4GHz effectively 40 channels are available and the sets automatically set themselves to an unused frequency when switched on. Operation is constantly self monitored and the set will move to an unused frequency if any interference is detected.

Is 2.4GHz good for RC? ›

In general 2.4 which normally is frequency hopping and is reliable so long as you're not near any interference which can come from a cell tower and your setup installation is done correctly. Good antenna placement and reliable power source to receiver.

How do I increase the range of my radio transmitter? ›

Three Tips for Extending Two Way Radio Range
  1. Improve the antenna - Larger antennas can boost the range of a two way radio. ...
  2. Use a repeater – Signal repeaters can help extend range. ...
  3. Make sure your batteries are good – Low battery strength can impact the strength of your radio signal.

How far can a transmitter reach? ›

Being low-powered, most transmitters typically have a short range of 100–300 feet (30–91 metres), depending on the quality of the receiver, obstructions and elevation.

Is 2.4 GHz good for remote control car? ›

The radio technology of RC cars these days uses the 2.4 GHz frequency, which makes it possible to drive dozens of cars simultaneously without having to manually change the frequencies. After the transmitter and the car's receiver are bound, their functioning won't be interfered by other radio equipment.

How far does RF remote control work? ›

90% of the time you will be working within the range of 5 to 30 meters (15 to 100 feet) because the limitation will not be the radio signal, but your eyesight.

What is the difference between 2.4 GHz and 5GHz remote control? ›

Range and Penetration

2.4GHz: Better at covering larger areas and penetrating through walls and floors. 5GHz: Provides stronger performance in smaller spaces with less physical obstructions.
