Benzoyl peroxide is a popular acne treatment and people vouch for it because it actually works. Usually Benzoyl peroxide is prescribed by a dermatologist or a physician after evaluating a person’s skin type and acne condition, but benzoyl peroxide is also usually available over the counter. But there are certain side effects associated with benzoyl peroxide which you cannot ignore. Benzoyl peroxide can make your skin super dry and flaky. It can also cause burns if used on a regular basis. 1. Moisturise your skin: The most common effect of benzoyl peroxide is that it dries out skin. Some people enjoy the new matte, oil-free skin; however, most people find it uncomfortable as their skin tends to peel, flake, and sting. The best way to combat the side effects of benzoyl peroxide is by applying a non-comedogenic moisturiser day and night. If your skin is too dry, then slather it often as necessary. The best way to apply to apply benzoyl peroxide is by cleansing the skin, then applying non-comedogenic moisturiser, wait for the cream to get absorbed and dry out on the skin. It hardly takes 5-10 minutes and lastly apply benzoyl peroxide cream/ointment. Make sure you are not too generous with this cream. You only need a little amount because excess of it can make your skin extremely dry, red and flaky.
2. Apply sunscreen mandatorily:Benzoyl peroxide makes skin photosensitive, which means skin becomes more vulnerable to sun tan, sun burn, and sun damage and it’s recommended to avoid sun exposure as much as possible and apply generous coat of sunscreen 20 minutes prior to stepping out in the sun. Choose a oil-free sunscreen of SPF 30 or above (SPF 50 is preferable) along with UVA and UVB protection. Using an umbrella and sunglasses along with the sunscreen is highly recommended.
3. Stick to one product: Using multiple creams to clear up acne could be the worst decision. It could cause severe redness, itching, peeling and flaking. Don’t use any other acne cream unless it’s recommended by your dermatologist. Benzoyl peroxide is a slow worker it may look like it’s not working but we recommend to be patient and persistent to see results.
