Kennecott's Bingham Canyon Mine is the largest artificially made excavation in the world, and is visible to the naked eye from an orbiting space shuttle. Employing some 2,000 workers, 450,000 short tons (400,000 long tons; 410,000 t) of material are removed from the mine daily.

By far the most uranium production, however, has been from the Colorado Plateau in northern Arizona. Some of the uranium there is associated with sandstone units. The richest deposits, the ones that have greatest potential today, occur in what geologists call "collapse-breccia pipes," or simply breccia pipes.

The states with the largest known uranium ore reserves (not counting byproduct uranium from phosphate) are (in order) Wyoming, New Mexico, and Colorado. The radiation hazards of uranium mining and milling were not appreciated in the early years, resulting in workers being exposed to high levels of radiation.

Most mines producing uranium as a primary commodity are, or were located, in Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, New Mexico and Arizona, and are typically on federal and Tribal lands.

The panning effort netted enough gold and black sand, the sand and the gold being about equally divided, to fill a very small perfume bottle. A prospector would say, "Yes, there is placer gold along the Colorado but there is too much sand mixed with it to make it worth recovering".

The demand for uranium continues to increase, but the supply is not keeping up. Current uranium reserves are expected to be depleted by the end of the century, and new sources of uranium are hard to find. As a result, uranium prices have been steadily rising, with some estimates predicting a doubling of prices by 2030.

What is it used for? Uranium “enriched” into U-235 concentrations can be used as fuel for nuclear power plants and the nuclear reactors that run naval ships and submarines. It also can be used in nuclear weapons.

Rio Tinto is the sole owner of the Kennecott copper project and operates it through its subsidiary Kennecott Utah Copper. The Kennecott mine, Copperton concentrator and Garfield smelter comprise one of the largest and most up-to-date integrated copper operations in the world.

The mine was re-opened in 1985 for gallium and germanium. It is currently owned by Teck Cominco American, Inc.

The Resolution Copper project is a proposed underground mine 60 miles east of Phoenix, Arizona, near the town of Superior. The project is a joint venture owned by Rio Tinto (55%) and BHP (45%). The ore deposit lies nearly 7,000 feet below the earth's surface.
