2021 was the year that saw Renault lose its hegemony in the national car market. Not only lost the best-selling car brand title, but also the best-selling car model, Renault Clio.

Peugeot surpassed Renault and is now the best-selling brand in Portugal, closing the hegemony of 23 years of Reanult. The French brand reign suffered yet another setback when the Clio ceased to be the favorite model of the Portuguese, putting an end to an eight-year legacy. The Peugeot 3008, which had already climbed five places in 2020, made its status as the official leader.

So, Peugeot became the absolute leader in sales, overtaking Renault. In terms of models, get to know the best-selling cars in Portugal in 2021.

10th place — Peugeot 3008

After failing to make 2020 Top 10, the Peugeot 3008 is back on the list. The restyling of the model may have been the key to captivating the consumers.

Last year, sales of the Peugeot 3008 grew 29.3% over the previous year, with a total of 2652 units sold in our country.

9th place — Toyota Yaris

Another surprise in the Top 2021 is the presence of the Japanese brand. Last year, 2790 units of the Toyota Yaris were sold, a 36.4% growth compared to 2020. An increase that allowed the brand to debut at the top of the best-selling cars in Portugal.

8th place — BMW Série 1

The first “repeater” of the national sales list only debuted in eighth place. But in 2021, the BMW 1 Series fell one place compared to the previous year’s top. With 3,216 registered sales, BMW’s most urban model only achieved a 0.03% sales growth compared to 2020.

7th place — Dacia Sandero

Dacia Sandero is the model that grew the most in 2021, about 44.3%. In total, 3,501 sales of this model of the Romanian brand were registered. This growth may be associated with the evolution of the new Sandero generation.

6th place — Citroën C3

Citroën C3 repeated its position at the top of national sales, maintaining excellent commercial performance in Portugal. With 3,520 units registered in 2021, the sales of the French city car grew 4.7% comparative to 2020.

5th place — Mercedes-Benz Classe A

Mercedes-Benz A-Class had the biggest drop in 2021 sales top. If in 2020 it won second place on the list, in 2021 the German brand’s most urban model did not go beyond fifth place.

In total, 3,998 sales of the Mercedes-Benz A-Class were registered, a decrease of 33.1% compared to the previous year.

4th place — Peugeot 208

We’re back to the climbs in the national sales table. The Peugeot 208 went up one place in 2021 and conquered 4th place in the preference of the Portuguese. The 4,834 units sold of this model translated into a 23.9% growth compared to 2020.

3rd place — Renault Captur

Renault Captur also climbed one position in the national sales ranking. The French compact city SUV climbed to the podium in the list of the favorite models of the Portuguese. Compared to 2020, Renault Captur sales rose 18.6%, with 5,017 units sold in 2021.

2nd place — Renault Clio

The 2020 top leader was dethroned but still remains a sales success and a favorite of the Portuguese.

In 2021, the Renault Clio fell to second place, with a 29.9% drop in sales. With 5,601 units sold in 2021, the French SUV continues as Renault’s most popular model.

1st place — Peugeot 2008

2021 could not have gone better for Peugeot. Besides conquering Renault’s leadership of the national market, the Peugeot 2008 became the Portuguese’s favorite model.

The French model jumped from third to first place in 2021, with a 34% growth compared to 2020. With 6,404 units sold, the Peugeot 2008 was the best-selling car in Portugal last year.
