How to Relocate Your Chart

Relocated Chart Basics (1)• First, obtain your natal chart, based onthe date, time, and place of your birth — if you don't already have it on hand.

• Then, replace your place of birth with the new locationyou are interested in, but leave the date, time, and time zone unchanged. The resulting chart is your new chart for that location. The planets(even the Moon) will all remain at the same degrees, but the angles andthe houses will change. If you move east, the Midheaven degree increases(about 1° per degree of longitude moved). If you move west, it decreases. The Ascendant degree changes at a different rate, depending on the newlatitude as well as longitude.

Why Relocate Your Chart?

Many astrologers believe that the relocated horoscope actslike a secondary natal chart, responding to transits and progressions inthe same way the birth chart does. The relocated chart shows how the skylooked at the moment of your birth — not from your birthplace, but from adifferent location on Earth.

Relocated Chart Basics (2)Here is a rather famous example ofrelocating a chart. President John F. Kennedy was born in Massachusettswith Saturn within one degree of his Midheaven (see chart 1). When hischart is relocated for Dallas, Texas, where he was assassinated, theMidheaven changes from the 28th degree of Cancer to the 4th degree (see chart 2), putting Pluto at the Midheaven.

Relocated Chart Basics (3)If you were to view JFK's Astrolocalitymap, you would see the Pluto-Midheaven line (PL–MH) running near theDallas metropolitan area, and the Saturn-Midheaven line (SA–MH) runningthrough New England.

Even with an accurate Astrolocality map, it is still useful to lookat the actual relocated horoscope, because an Astrolocality map does notshow which signs are on which house cusps or what aspects planets make tothe new angles of the chart. The rulerships of the houses may change witha move of as little as 100 miles. If you do move to this new location, pay special attention to transits of the planets over the Ascendant andMidheaven of this relocated chart.
