It���s all in the name. And it���s not just Shakespeare who thought so. Take a look at the 67 companies listed on the BSE and you will get a clearer picture.
Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Balaji, Lord Krishna, Lord Ganesha, Lord Tirupati figure quite prominently in the company titles. In fact, Goddess Lakshmi is by far the most popular with at least 12 companies in the name of the Goddess. Lord Balaji���s name figures in 10 companies, including that of soap queen Ekta Kapoor���s Balaji Telefilms, while Lord Ganesha���s name is present in seven of them, Lord Krishna figures in six of the listed companies.
But does it really work if your company name starts with that of a god or goddess? Does it in any way impact an investor? ���I don���t think it impacts an investor in the current juncture. Such a psyche may have existed earlier but that has changed with the exposure that investors have now to international media and markets,��� says Ambareesh Baliga, veep, Karvy Stockbroking.
Some, however, still feel that a religious name in the title does help in some way. Says Ashish Kapoor, CEO, Invest Shoppe India, ���It does help to some extent since a majority of the investing communities in India are conservative who do get affected by religious names. Hence, the name of god may help a conventional business to some extent.���
Opinions may be divided on this but it may be not enough to believe that a religious name alone can make a company���s profits soar. Out of the 67 companies listed on the BSE Index, 24 have traded in the last 30 days.
The combined market capitalisation of the said 24 companies stands at Rs 19,281 crore as on April 17, a figure that falls short of the market cap of several top companies in India.
