How long does LED lighting last? - Peeq (2024)

This depends on a number of factors. We try to paint a clear picture of exactly what you can expect from LED lighting.

LED bulbs

Classic halogen lamps are increasingly being replaced by LED lamps, or also called retro-fit lamps. These last much longer than halogen bulbs.

On the other hand, the capacity of LED lamps is still limited by the electronics in the lamp, which ensure that the LED lamp operates on the existing voltage of the halogen lamps.

Also, an LED lamp has to stay cool. When LED lights heat up, they break down. The limited cooling in retro-fit lamps reduces their lifespan.

Also, switching the lamp on and off frequently will not improve the number of burning hours. All things considered, the average lifetime of an LED bulb will currently be around 20,000 - 25,000 hours.

Integrated LED

Integrated LED is LED lighting that is incorporated into a luminaire. The disadvantage of this is that when the LED stops working, you have to replace the entire luminaire. To compensate, integrated LED does last a tremendously long time.

The power supply is usually external and separate from the LED, which benefits the quality of the electronics in the power supply. If the power supply stops working, the power supply can easily be replaced without having to replace the LED. LED integrated in a luminaire lasts 40,000 hours to 50,000 hours on average. Keep in mind that there is still a lot of variation in this. For instance, there are still big differences in quality between different LED chips.

LED modules

A third option is LED modules. This is the best of the above two options put together. An LED module can be connected directly to the power supply. No more need for a socket. All components come separately with an LED module. The necessary electronics to make the LED work are present in the external power supply. If the electronics in the external power supply fail, you can simply replace the power supply.

The disadvantage, however, is that LED modules are more difficult to use in luminaires with special shapes. Like integrated LED, LED modules last 40,000 hours to 50,000 hours on average. ClickFit spotlights are specially made for LED modules. These spotlights have a click system that allows the LED module to be held in place, without the help of a fitting.

In practice

Here are some practical examples to give you a better idea of how long 25,000 hours precisely is.

In a shop that is open every day except Sunday and where the lights are on for 9 hours each day, LED lights will last approximately 8 years and 10 months.

Offices are open for an average of 250 days a year. If we assume that the lights stay on for 10 hours each day, here the LED lights will last for 10 years.

In a living room, the lights will be on every day (except for a few days when the family is on vacation), although this will be mainly in the evening. If the lights are on for an average of 3 hours per day, the LED will last 23 years and 9 months.

Naturally, the lights in the bathroom are used much less than in the living room. Here, the LED will last as long as 71 years and 5 months, if the lights are on for 1 hour per day. In this context, it must be mentioned we are not taking into account the wear-and-tear on the electronics of the LED. If the electronics fail, the LED will no longer work. However, an LED that lasts 71 years is (for the time being) a pipe dream.

FAQs

How long does the LED lights last? ›

LED bulbs afford in the region of 50,000 hours of light, with some brands boasting as many as 100,000 hours. In general, terms, if you use your lights for 10 hours each day, LEDs should serve you well for just shy of 14 years.

How fast do LED lights burn out? ›

LED bulbs are expected to last from anywhere between 15,000 to 50,000 hours in ideal circ*mstances, which makes them amazing value for money. However, there are a few situations that can prevent your LED bulbs from reaching that maximum lifespan, which we're here to illuminate!

How long does an LED tube light last? ›

An LED lifespan can range from 50,000 hours of light to 100,000 hours. In short, if you use your lights for about 10 hours everyday, LEDs should serve you well for about 14 years. This is way more than a traditional light bulb.

How long do integral LED lights last? ›

If the power supply stops working, the power supply can easily be replaced without having to replace the LED. LED integrated in a luminaire lasts 40,000 hours to 50,000 hours on average.

How do LED lights wear out? ›

Unlike incandescent light bulbs, LEDs don't produce light using heat. This is part of what makes them so energy efficient. The downside is that their components can be sensitive to overheating, which can cause them to burn out prematurely.

Is it OK to leave LED lights on all day? ›

Well-made LED lights can be left on 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They last extremely long and are relatively safe due to their very low chance of overheating. On average, LED bulbs last between 35,000 and 50,000 hours. LED bulbs convert about 90 percent of energy into light and 10 percent into heat.

Is it bad to leave LED lights on 24 7? ›

Are LED lights safe to keep on all night? The short answer is that LED lights can be left on all night without risk. LED lights are made to run constantly for a long time without overheating or causing any safety risks.

Why do LED lights fail so quickly? ›

There are a number of basic reasons for LED lights to fail but the primary issue is heat. Over-heating can be a result of a number of design and assembly issues but is still the cause of the majority of LED lamp failures – both in the fitting themselves and also the drivers.

Do LED lights burn out or just flash? ›

Over time LED lights will eventually fade away, but they don't burn out. However, they typically last longer than traditional incandescent bulbs and other lighting options.

Why are my LED lights flickering? ›

The most common issue with flickering is the dimmer and downlight compatibility issues. The dimmer and downlights must talk together in sync. Using old dimmers designed for halogen lights on LED downlights will most likely cause flickering.

Do LED bulbs get hot? ›

Even the best LED light bulbs will lightly warm up because of the internal components that create the light. The base of the LED bulb acts as a heat sink and allows the surface of the bulb to maintain a safe temperature. However, if these components are not adequately ventilated, it will produce more heat output.

How long do outdoor LED lights last? ›

LED Floodlights from a reputable manufacturer will have a lifespan of approximately 50,000 hours.

Does LED lights stop working? ›

Reasons often include a faulty power supply, loose connections, a faulty circuit design, or even damage due to water ingress caused by rain. Whatever the reason is for your LED lights not working and whatever the tell-tale signs are, there's usually a solution to the issue.

Why is LED lighting better? ›

The light-emitting diode (LED) is today's most energy-efficient and rapidly developing lighting technology. Quality LED light bulbs last longer, are more durable, and offer comparable or better light quality than other types of lighting.

What is the lifespan of an LED power supply? ›

These power supplies are designed to power LED lights and can have a lifespan of between 50,000 to 100,000 hours on average. However, again, it's important to remember that this lifespan can be impacted by a number of factors such as the quality of the LED driver, the operating conditions, and the usage of the driver.

How often should LED lights be replaced? ›

While the lifespan of LED lighting depends on its use and application, most standard lamps last 50,000 hours, while dimmable LED lamps can last nearly 100,000 hours. For facilities like hospitals and distribution centers that have lights on 24/7, that (theoretically) could mean longevity of six years.

Do LED lights eventually burn out? ›

LED bulbs don't burn out like regular bulbs, which simply stop working abruptly when they run out of power. Instead, LED bulbs slowly degrade over time. After several years, their brightness dims. This is known as “luminous decay.” When they emit faint light, it's time to change them.
