What does BPOE mean in the Elks Club? ›

Since its founding on February 16, 1868, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (BPOE) has been recognized by the noble creature that is the symbol of the Order. The elk is a peaceful animal, but will rise in defense of its own in the face of a threat. The majestic creature is fleet of foot and keen of perception.

The initiation rite is not considered a secret. The initiation involves an altar, with a Bible upon it and chaplain leading the brethren in prayers and psalms.

Once you are initiated as a member, you can take part in all meetings and social functions of the Lodge. At this lodge, there is a $75 application/initiation fee and membership dues for the year are $40, which are not pro-rated.

At any gathering of Elks, it is the custom that at 11 p.m. everything ceases for a moment of remembrance. This is done in a solemn but brief ceremony called, “The 11 O'clock Toast”. Members are asked to stand, remove their hats, and there is a tolling of 11 strokes.
