Holden eyeing special milestone in final season | Supercars (2024)

Holden’s final season in Supercars will come with added incentive for its drivers.

The 2022 Repco Supercars Championship will feature the final battle between Holden and Ford.

The arrival of Gen3 in 2023 will also see the Chevrolet Camaro replace Holden.

The Holden brand, which was retired in 2020, has been carried to a record 590 wins in ATCC/Supercars competition.

As such, Holden could become the first marque to reach 600 race victories in the championship.

The 16 Holden drivers on the 2022 grid will be armed with at least 34 races this season to help the iconic brand crack 600.

There will be at least 34 races in 2022, although the possible return of the Adelaide 500 could see that number increase.

There’s high chance of Holden recording 600 wins this year; 2009 was the last season Holden won fewer than 10 races in a year.

The very first win for Holden came at Surfers Paradise in 1969, with Norm Beechey steering a Holden HK Monaro GTS327 to victory.

The famous Commodore nameplate has been driven to 540 of Holden’s 590 wins.

An even 600 wins for Holden would also carry the Commodore, which was retired in 2019, to 550 wins.

Shane van Gisbergen, who has won 52 of his 54 career races in Holdens, is also in line for a rare achievement.

Van Gisbergen won the 450th, 500th and 550th races for Holden.

Considering his 2021 dominance, he’s a chance to help the Red Lion to its 600th win.

Van Gisbergen scored Holden's 500th win in 2016

Four of van Gisbergen’s contemporaries have helped Ford to its four most recent milestone wins.

Will Davison scored Ford’s 250th win at Winton in 2008, four years before Mark Winterbottom helped the Blue Oval to 300 wins.

Scott McLaughlin recorded Ford’s 350th win in 2017, before his effective replacement Anton De Pasquale brought up 400 last year.

The current Commodore ZB and Mustang GT are also closing on some impressive markers, either of which will be recorded in 2022.

The Commodore ZB will start 2022 on 60 wins, and is three shy of the Commodore VT in third place.

The Mustang GT is on 47 wins, and needs eight more wins to become Ford’s most successful model in ATCC/Supercars history.
