In 2025, I embarked on a golf adventure, playing five top-rated public courses in Michigan for the first time. But this wasn't your typical New Year's resolution story.
I vowed to explore the greens of the Great Lakes State, and while the courses I played weren't the initial ones planned, the experience was nothing short of remarkable. There's something magical about approaching a golf course for the first time, the anticipation building as you catch glimpses of the fairways and bunkers that will soon challenge your skills.
The Orchards Golf Club, Washington Township:
In mid-June, I teed off at The Orchards, a course that has consistently ranked among the best in metro Detroit. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., its 525 acres offer a unique blend of large bunkers, expansive fairways, and varied holes. Even the rain couldn't dampen the excitement of playing this top-tier course.
Tullymore Golf Resort, Stanwood:
In August, I encountered the stunning Tullymore, an approach-shot enthusiast's dream. Designed by Jim Engh, the course winds through 800 acres of deep woods and wetlands. The real star here? The multi-tiered greens, which will have you strategizing and replaying holes in your mind long after your round.
Timber Trace Golf Club, Pinckney:
A pleasant surprise awaited me at Timber Trace in early September. Under new management, this course has been transformed. Surrounded by woods, it offers a spacious feel, challenging you to hit the ample fairways while avoiding the penalizing tall grass and trees. A great course at a great value.
Northville Hills Golf Club, Northville:
Celebrating its 25th anniversary, Northville Hills, designed by Arnold Palmer, offers a well-maintained layout. The fast, rolling greens are a highlight, with visually striking hazards that demand precision. A course that balances fun and challenge, it's a fitting tribute to The King.
Forest Dunes Golf Club, Roscommon:
My journey concluded at Forest Dunes in late September. With 64 holes, including the reversible course, The Loop, and the upcoming members-only SkyFall, this place is a golfer's paradise. Designed by British Open champion Tom Weiskopf, the course showcases his signature short par-4s and stunning par-3s set against a backdrop of towering trees and rugged natural beauty. The Bootlegger par-3 course and The Loop will tempt you to plan your next golf getaway.
And here's where it gets controversial: Was Forest Dunes the ultimate highlight, or did the other courses offer equally memorable experiences? Share your thoughts in the comments! As a golf enthusiast, I'd love to hear your take on these Michigan gems and any hidden courses you've discovered. Let's spark a conversation about the beauty and diversity of golf in the Great Lakes State!
