10 highest horsepower cars you can buy (2024)

If you like your cars, the chances are you like to have plenty of power. If this is the case then you’ll want to check out this list of the most powerful cars available.

There are few things more thrilling than burying your foot in the carpet of a high-powered supercar on a drag strip. Granted, most of the cars on this list air on the expensive side of things but that’s (literally) the price you pay for this much horsepower.

It’s worth highlighting that when a humble hatchback might have 115hp or so, nobody really needs a thousand-plus-horsepower hypercar. But the desire to design, build, sell and own machines such as this works on the same principle climbers take approaching Everest: nobody needs to climb to its peak; there’s no quaint cafe, antiquated lending library or historic ferris wheel there justifying a visit – people climb it because it’s the highest mountain in the world.

The endless race to build the most powerful car – even if it only occupies that status for a moment – is therefore a competitive one with lots of players, some big, some small. As a result, making a choice about which cars to include in this list is no simple matter, with one-off builds, track cars that aren’t road legal, and vehicles with unverified horsepower outputs all vying for attention in this arena.

There are also a number of cases where a prototype, potentially record-breaking hypercar car might be displayed at a motorshow or possibly demonstrated flying around a track – before shuffling off the stage and being heard of no more – or at least not until its makers have secured another round of development funding.

This list may therefore not be definitive – but it’s certainly exciting.

Some of the cars with the most horsepower available on sale are:

  1. Lotus Evija: 2,000hp
  2. Rimac Nevera: 1,914hp
  3. Hennessey Venom F5: 1,842hp
  4. Bugatti Chiron SS: 1,600hp
  5. Koenigsegg Regera: 1,479hp
  6. Tesla Model S Plaid: 1,020hp
  7. Dodge Demon: 840hp
  8. Ferrari 812 Superfast: 800hp
  9. Rivian R1T: 800hp
  10. Lamborghini Aventador SVJ: 770hp
  11. Mclaren 765 LT: 765hp
  12. Porsche Taycan Turbo S: 761hp

1. Lotus Evija (2,000hp)

  • 0-60mph: ‘under 3 seconds’
  • Engine: Four electric motors
  • Torque: 1,704Nm
  • Transmission: single-speed, four-wheel-drive
  • Top speed: 218mph
  • Price: £2m+

Our top entry and already a potentially contentious pick as it’s not available for customers yet (though prototypes have been test-drive), so ‘available to order’ might be more accurate than ‘on sale’. But with Lotus touting the Evija as being “the most powerful series production road car ever built” and, crucially, with the might of Volvo owner Geely’s wallet behind it, it would take a brave person to doubt the Evija will create a few storms and take a few records when customer deliveries arrive.

2. Rimac Nevera (1,914hp)

  • 0-60mph: 1.97 seconds
  • Engine: Four electric motors
  • Transmission: twin single-speed gearboxes, four-wheel drive
  • Torque: 2,300 Nm
  • Top speed: 258mph
  • Price: Around £1.7m

You no longer need a massive engine to get massive horsepower, as proven by the Rimac Nevera. Thanks to a 120kWh battery and four electric motors, this insane car has 1,914hp and 2,300Nm of torque.

Read the Rimac Nevera review

It’s much more than just tear-your-face-off fast though, it’s a beautiful place to sit as well. All the interior parts are bespoke to the Nevera and crafted from high quality leather and carbon fibre.

3. Hennessey Venom F5: 1,842hp

10 highest horsepower cars you can buy (2)
  • 0-60mph: 1.97 seconds
  • Engine: 6.6-litre V8, twin turbo
  • Transmission: seven-speed single-clutch, rear-wheel drive
  • Torque: 1,617 Nm
  • Top speed: 271mph
  • Price: Around £3m

US hypercar maker Hennessey doesn’t really build cars for the UK market, preferring to launch its models in North America, where it has a larger customer base and wider recognition. But then with only 24 examples of the coupe, and 30 open-top examples of the Venom F5 being built, Hennessey doesn’t really built cars for anyone, save those lucky enough to have a few million bucks in their back pocket, and the bravery to take on an 1,800hp+ monster.

4. Bugatti Chiron Super Sport (1,600hp)

  • 0-60mph: 2.4 seconds
  • Engine: 8.0-litre W16
  • Transmission: seven-speed dual-clutch, four-wheel drive
  • Torque: 1,600 Nm
  • Top speed: 273mph
  • Price: £2.75m

When you think of horsepower, you probably think of Bugatti and the 1,000hp Veyron from the early noughties. Well they’ve come a long way since then, and the latest Bugatti Chiron has 1,600hp.

Compare the latest sports cars

As if an 8.0-litre W16 engine wasn’t enough, Bugatti decided what it really needed was four turbochargers strapping to it. What’s really insane however is the way you can catapult from 0-60mph in 2.4 seconds whilst sitting in palatial luxury.

5. Koenigsegg Regera (1,479hp)

10 highest horsepower cars you can buy (3)
  • 0-60mph: 2.8 seconds
  • Engine: 5.0-litre V8 + 3 electric motors
  • Transmission: bespoke single-speed, rear-wheel drive
  • Torque: 1,280 Nm
  • Top speed: 250mph
  • Price: £1.5m

When you combine a 5.0-litre V8 engine with three electric motors, the results are always going to be pretty potent. Almost 1,500hp is enough to shoot the Regera from 0-249mph in just over 31 seconds.

It also has no traditional gearbox, favouring a unique system called Koenigsegg Direct Drive which is essentially just a torque converter in place of a gearbox. You get automatic opening for all the doors on the car, as well as a very nicely finished interior.

6. Tesla Model S Plaid (1,020hp)

  • 0-60mph: 1.99 seconds
  • Engine: Three electric motors
  • Transmission: single-speed, four-wheel drive
  • Torque: 1,420 Nm
  • Top speed: 200mph
  • Price: £111,980

You may not be expecting to see a four-door saloon car on this list, and yet here we are. The Tesla Model S Plaid is a car you can use to scare supercar owners, and take the family along for the ride.

Tesla Model S review

It’s also packed with tech to make daily driving less stressful, although the ‘yoke’ steering wheel may undo some of that serenity when it comes to manoeuvring. It’s a modern looking car though, both inside and out.

7. Dodge Demon (840hp)

  • 0-60mph: 2.3 seconds
  • Engine: 6.2-litre supercharged V8
  • Transmission: eight-speed torque converter, rear-wheel drive
  • Torque: 1,098 Nm
  • Top speed: 211mph
  • Price: £60,000

The Dodge Demon really does prove that there’s no replacement for displacement. It was designed with drag racing in mind , and as such didn’t come with a passenger seat as standard. You also need to put 100 octane race fuel in to get the full 840hp, otherwise you have to make do with “just” 808hp.

If you take your drag racing seriously, you could also have the ‘Demon Crate’. This was a box which included a handful of tools, as well as skinny drag wheels for the front, a performance air filter, a new ECU and a replacement dash panel with a high-octane fuel switch.

8. Ferrari 812 Superfast (800hp)

10 highest horsepower cars you can buy (4)
  • 0-60mph: 2.9 seconds
  • Engine: 6.5-litre V12
  • Transmission: seven-speed dual-clutch, rear-wheel drive
  • Torque: 718 Nm
  • Top speed: 211mph
  • Price: £260,000

You can’t really talk about high horsepower without mentioning a V12 Ferrari, and the 812 Superfast is a pretty special one (which it ought to be with a name like that). You can really stretch the legs of that V12, all the way to 9,000rpm, and it sounds pretty incredible when you do.

It’s not just the raw power that makes the 812 so impressive. The fact it’s so comfortable and easy to tame, unlike its predecessor the F12, is truly remarkable. The cabin also manages to be a combination of stripped back and luxurious at the same time, which is an impressive feat.

9. Rivian R1T (800hp)

  • 0-60mph: 3.8 seconds
  • Torque: 1,231 Nm
  • Transmission: single-speed, four-wheel drive
  • Engine: Four electric motors
  • Top speed: 111mph (limited)
  • Price: £51,000

Another unlikely candidate for a high-horsepower hero, the Rivian R1T is an all-electric pickup truck. The top speed may not be anything to write home about, however the power and torque more than makes up for this in acceleration.

Rivian R1T review

The R1T is also packed with clever features, such as a portable speaker under the seat and a rechargeable torch in the door card. You can also specify a camping kitchen which slides out of the side in case you fancy taking in the great outdoors.

10. Lamborghini Aventador SVJ (770hp)

  • 0-60mph: 2.8 seconds
  • Engine: 6.5-litre V12
  • Transmission: seven-speed automated manual, four-wheel drive
  • Torque: 720 Nm
  • Top speed: 217 mph
  • Price: £360,000

Back to the mental supercars, the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ is one of the final versions of the brand’s flagship. It’s sporting some fairly old tech, such as the single-clutch robotized manual gearbox which can be very jerky at low speeds.

Get help choosing your next car

Ignore this though, and you can appreciate that stunning V12 soundtrack and the fact that it’s far less intimidating to drive quickly than you’d expect. In true Lambo fashion, it’s also outrageous to look at with its massive rear wind and aggressive body kit.

11. McLaren 765 LT (765hp)

10 highest horsepower cars you can buy (5)
  • 0-60mph: 2.7 seconds
  • Engine: 4.0-litre V8
  • Transmission: seven-speed dual-clutch, rear-wheel drive
  • Torque: 800 Nm
  • Top speed: 205mph
  • Price: £280,000

McLaren’s naming strategy is pretty straight forward, the 765 LT has 765hp, however that’s about the only thing about this car which is simple. It’s rammed full of technology to make it as fast as possible on the racetrack.

You can adjust what angle you’d like to drift at on the screen, as an example, and there’s an active suspension setup to further improve cornering. The exhaust is made of titanium to save weight, and even the wheels have been on a diet.

12. Porsche Taycan Turbo S (761hp)

10 highest horsepower cars you can buy (6)
  • 0-60mph: 2.8 seconds
  • Engine: Two electric motors
  • Transmission: two-speed automatic, four-wheel drive
  • Torque: 850 Nm
  • Top speed: 162mph
  • Price: £140,000

Another all-electric saloon makes it to the list, and it’s a pretty special one. The Porsche Taycan really proves that electric cars can be huge fun to drive. It hides its weight through the corners extremely well, managing to be nimble and responsive despite weighing over 2.2 tons.

Lease a Porsche Taycan

If the saloon body shell is a touch impractical for you, you can have a gorgeous looking estate version called the Sport Turismo. This offers all the same performance in a versatile package. It really is the ultimate daily driver. Oh, and in case you were wondering, the two-speed gearbox detail in the bullet points above isn’t a typo: uniquely for an EV, the Taycan has a twin-speed gearbox, with one to aid acceleration from a standing start, and one to improve high-speed cruising efficiency.
